Resilience lies within all of us we just have to activate and build on it. It’s not just about ‘bouncing’ back from a challenge or adversity, but the positive action and learning we take forward from an experience or situation.
When our child shares with you a negative experience or event about their day, help them step into their ‘circle of control’ and ask them ‘What would you do now? How could you respond differently?’ ‘Is this something you have control over?’ If not, can they ‘let that go’ and focus on what they do have control of.
Having this conversation with your child supports them in dealing with challenge and helps them learn, building resilience together. Taking positive action will build your child’s resilience and capacity to deal with tricky and difficult situations better.
The brain can be required to be more positive by changing our focus and reflecting on things that we going well. By asking the question ‘what went well today?’ or ‘what are you looking forward to?’ we can start to rewire our thinking and create a more positive outlook. These conversations are great to do as a family or individually to help build resilience together.
